Tucked away in the rugged mountains of southern New Mexico, the Catwalk Trails offer an unforgettable hiking experience. Located in the Gila National Forest near the small town of Glenwood, this unique trail system takes adventurers through a scenic gorge with stunning cliffs, flowing waters, and, of course, the famous “catwalk” — a narrow, suspended bridge that hugs the rock walls above the stream.
The trail is about 1.5 miles long (one way), making it a perfect option for hikers of various skill levels. The Catwalk itself was originally built in the 1930s as a pipeline maintenance path for the area's mining operations, and it was later expanded into a public trail. The hike includes several bridges and ladders, which add an exciting element to the journey, as well as breathtaking views of the canyon and the Whitewater Creek below.
The area is rich in natural beauty, with an abundance of plant and wildlife species, including birds like the peregrine falcon and native trout in the creek. Along the trail, visitors will also notice remnants of the old mining infrastructure, giving the area an intriguing historical flair. For those interested in a longer trek, there are additional, more challenging trails branching off from the Catwalk Trail that explore deeper into the forest and offer even more stunning vistas.
The trailhead features a small visitor center where hikers can learn more about the history of the area and pick up trail maps. It's an ideal spot for a picnic before or after your hike. The best time to visit is spring and fall when temperatures are milder, though the area offers beauty year-round.
Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual nature lover, the Catwalk Trails deliver a memorable and picturesque journey through some of New Mexico’s most stunning and unique landscapes.
