Flying Solo. A term that spills from the tip of my tongue with ease. A common turn of phrase I've never really thought about twice but now makes my heart slam against my ribs.
Flying Solo.
My palms sweat and the handle of my suitcase is threatening to slip from my grip. The Southwest desk attendant asks for the names and ages of the people in my party.

She looks at the eager faces beaming back at her, colorful backpacks stuffed with all sorts of fun things slung across their backs and mini suitcases in tow. She can't help but smile. It must be contagious, because everywhere we go, the smiles follow. I can't blame her. They're freaking adorable.
She hands back my license with a raised brow and asks if I'm flying solo. The acid in my stomach burns the back of my throat.
I nod and smile. She hands me six boarding passes, and our journey begins. Gilbert, AZ, I hope you're ready for the Stockton Six. We're on our way, and we're ready to write our first chapter.

What a beautiful, wonderful, completely awe inspiring place to explore. The Bisti Badlands New Mexico are full of hoodoos, fossils, unique rock formations, and everything else in between. The girls and I went for Mother's Day, making a day trip of the whole thing, and we loved it, but we definitely have a few tips to share with you all!
Getting to Bisti De Na Zin is definitely a proper road trip. It's a solid 2 1/2 hours from Albuquerque, and that's without any stops. We went out and back in one day, and I think the next time we visit, we'll make a weekend of it. It's definitely worthy of more time!
The Badlands are a true wilderness...there aren't really any marked trails to follow. I definitely say that having GPS is a must, and after you park in the lot, pin it on your map. That way if you get lost exploring, you'll be able to find your way back.
It's also completely dry land that boasts no shade at all. So *come prepared*. We went in May, and it was already scorching hot. We sucked down every drop of water we had brought along, and then could've used twice as much. The first set of hoodoos is at least a mile from the parking lot, so the first bit you go isn't as interesting. By the time we caught up to those first cool rock formations, the girls were already tired and hungry, and really didn't make it much further after that!
I definitely can't wait to explore this place again, and next time I think I'll make it a solo trip so that I can go even further. We barely scratched the surface the first time around and I can't even imagine what else is waiting just around the corner! Strangest Hikes New Mexico!
